Well, Tallstriders have (in my opinion) one of the most import skills a pet can have, and that's Dash, so it will at least be fast to the monster- especially since the chase speed normalization. Plus, Mazzranache is PINK. You can't beat that.
The downside to it, however, is the lack of offensive bonuses, and the fact that it only eats fruit, cheese and fungus- all of which can be hard to find until you hit high enough level to get into felwood, where you can get unlimited amounts of fruit.

I have a boar, and the charge is very nice, especially in Warsong Gulch.
Another good option is a cat with prowl, which does good dps and can compliment your night elf's shadowmeld ability nicely. Just don't expect a cat to be chasing down any flag carriers until they get dash in the 30s (obviously you'll want to drop prowl before even trying).

Well personally I stuck with daggers. Having the ability to duel wield is nice....However They are my secondary weapon. I rely on my bow for the most damage, and I'm at level 32 & im tackliing elites that are one level above me and regular critters that are 2-3 above me with little trouble-Where alive I tell you, Alive!!ok i feel seriously underpowered for a lvl27 hunter. i get owned by critters of equal lvl. i'm constantly switching between my 2h axe which has mad dmg but hellishly...

All pets can tank quite well, even offensive pets.
As a MM hunter you also want offensive pets since those are better at building up hate.
I always go with a dps oriented pet, no matter what spec I currently have. But that is because I really like doing damage and I really do not want to step back while doing solo content (like farming). So a pet which can generate hate faster is the better pet for me.
And please don't connect the words survival and melee, it makes me feel bad.

Well for the Feed Pet I'd like it to use ( for now at least) Wild Hog Shank if available or Rockscale Cod if not (or what ever food) for the listed pet classes.
